Narrator: Pontius
Pilate had Jesus stripped and they put a scarlet robe on him, as well
as a crown of thorns. They spat, jeered at him and mocked him, then led
him out to be crucified. He was led to Golgotha, "the place of the
skull", the place of execution.
Narrator: At Golgotha he was offered wine mixed with myrrh. He refused
it.
Soldier: Save yourself if you are the king of the Jews!
Narrator: He was crucified and the soldiers divided his clothes among
them by throwing dice. It was nine o'clock in the morning.
Jesus: Forgive them, Father! They don't know what they are doing.
Soldier: They say he's their king. Come, Pilate has given us this
sign over his head - "This is Jesus - King of the Jews".Narrator: Two others, both criminals, were crucified, on each
side of him.
Criminal 1: Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!
Criminal 2: Don't you fear God? You received the same sentence
he did. Ours, however, is only right, because we are getting what we deserve
for what we did; but he has done no wrong. Remember me, Jesus, when you
come as King!
Jesus: I promise you that today you will be in paradise with me.
Jewish person: You were going to tear down the temple and build
it up again in three days! Save yourself if you are God's Son! Come on
down from the cross!
Chief priest: He saved others, but he cannot save himself! Isn't
he the king of Israel? If he comes down off the cross now, we will believe
in him! He trusts in God and claims to be God's Son. Well, then, let us
see if God wants to save him now!
Narrator: Standing close by were the apostle John, Jesus' mother,
his aunt and Mary of Magdelene.
Jesus: Mother! John is your son now. John, look after my mother
as if she were your mother.
Narrator: At noon darkness came and the curtain hanging in the
temple was torn in two. The darkness lasted for three hours.
Jesus: My God, my God, why did you abandon me?
Jewish person: He is calling for Elijah! Let us see if Elijah is
coming to save him!
Jesus: I am thirsty.
Narrator: Someone soaked a sponge in sour wine and tried to make
him drink it.
Jesus: Father! In your hands I place my spirit! It is finished!
Narrator: Jesus then gave a loud cry and breathed his last.
Chief soldier: Come let us put him out of his misery. Break his
legs.
Soldier: He is already dead, sir. I checked with my spear.
Chief Soldier: I have been watching him. He is not like the others.
He really was a good man, the Son of God, they say!
Narrator: When it was evening, a rich man, Joseph from Arimathea,
a disciple of Jesus arrived. He asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Joseph
took it, wrapped it in a new linen sheet, and placed it in his own tomb,
which he had recently dug out of solid rock.
