Presentation
Annas: So you are
the rabbi they are all talking about? The one who claims to be Messiah?
Tell me again of your teachings.
Jesus: You all have heard my teachings. You know who I am, and
what I represent, so why ask me again? If you're not sure, why not ask
those who have already heard me.
Narrator: One of the guards slapped him and spoke to him.
Guard: Don't speak in that way to your betters.
Jesus: If I have said anything wrong, tell everyone here what it
was. But if I am right in what I have said, why do you hit me?
Narrator: Jesus was then taken to Caiaphas, the High Priest, where
he was also faced by chief priests, teachers of the Law and elders. They
had been unsuccessfully trying to find some false evidence against Jesus,
so that he could be sentenced to death. Many witnesses came forwards,
but their stories didn't agree.
Caiaphas: In the name of the living God I now put you on oath:
tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.
Jesus: It is as you say. But I tell all of you: from this time
on you will see the Son of Man sitting on the right of the Almighty and
coming on the clouds of heaven!
Caiaphas: Blasphemy! We don't need any more witnesses! You have
just heard his blasphemy! What do you think?
Elder: He is guilty and must die!
Narrator: The guards blindfolded him and led him away. Some of
them spat at him, others hit him and mocked him. They put him in chains
and led him to Pilate, the Roman governor.
Elder: We caught this man telling people not to pay their taxes
and also claiming to be our Messiah.
Pilate: Are you the King of the Jews?
Jesus: Does this question come from you or have others told you
about me?
Pilate: Do you think I am a Jew? It was your own people and the
chief priests who handed you over to me. What have you done?
Jesus: My kingdom does not belong to this world. If it did, my
followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish
authorities. No, my kingdom does not belong here!
Pilate: Are you a king, then?
Jesus: You say that I am a king. I was born and came into the world
for this one purpose, to speak about the truth. Whoever belongs to the
truth listens to me.
Pilate: And what is truth?
Narrator: At that Jesus said no more. He had said enough.
Pilate: I find no reason to condemn this man.
Elder: With his teaching he is starting a riot among the people
all through Judea. He began in Galilee and now has come here.
Pilate: I have not found him guilty of any of the crimes you accuse
him of. I will have him whipped and let him go.
Narrator: It was pointed out to Pilate that, as it was Passover,
it was customary to set free any one prisoner that the crowd asked for.
The crowd had been manipulated by the chief priests so that another prisoner,
the violent Barabbas, would be the one to be freed.
Pilate: Which one should go free?
Crowd: Barabbas!
Pilate: What about Jesus, the so-called Messiah?
Crowd: Crucify him!
Pilate: But what crime has he committed?
Crowd: Crucify him!
Narrator: So Barabbas was set free and Pilate had Jesus whipped,
then handed over to be crucified.
