Script:
Bible reader: For
I received from the Lord the teaching that I passed on to you: that the
Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took a piece of bread
Narrator: The meal is over. Jesus reaches out and takes a piece
of unleavened bread that had been wrapped in a linen cloth. This piece,
called the afikoman, was broken off from a larger piece of bread earlier
in the service, as part of the ritual. It was wrapped and hidden, waiting
for its recovery after the meal. The time had now come.
Bible reader:
he gave thanks to God
Jesus: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe,
who brings forth bread from the earth.
Bible reader:
he broke the bread
Jesus: This is my body, which is broken for you.
Peter: What do you mean? How can this bread be
your body?
Jesus: (holding bread) See this bread. It has no leaven, no yeast.
Have you thought of the significance?
John: Yes, of course, master. Our forefathers had to leave Egypt
in a hurry, there was no time for the bread to rise.
Jesus: True. But what have I taught you about yeast?
Matthew: Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, the Sadducees and
of Herod!
Jesus: Well remembered, Matthew. One day you'll have to write these
things down!
Peter: You were talking of their hearts weren't you, their wickedness?
Jesus: Wickedness, hypocrisy, malice, all of these things. This
is why, when you think of me, you think of this bread without yeast, without
malice, without wickedness
without sin.
John: Yes Master, this bread will remind us of you. But you're
not going anywhere
are you
?
(pause) (Jesus breaks the bread and distributes it to the others. All
must eat.)
Narrator: During the Passover meal there are four cups of wine
drunk. Each has a different meaning. The first two, the cups of blessing
and judgement, have already been drunk before the meal. Jesus now lifts
the third cup, the cup of redemption.
Bible reader: In the same way, after the supper he took the cup
Jesus: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe,
who creates the fruit of the vine.
Bible reader:
then he said
Jesus: This cup is God's new covenant, sealed with my blood.
Peter: New covenant? Your blood? Master, what's this all about?
John: Quiet, Peter, I'm sure if we weren't so thick we would have
figured it out!
Jesus: John, you show great modesty, that's a real "Revelation".
But these are new concepts for you all. Just understand that I am starting
something new here tonight, for you and for the world. Tomorrow I go to
be sacrificed, my blood to be shed.
Peter: Surely not, Master. I will not allow this!
Jesus: Peter! We've talked before about this. You must think before
you speak! My mission is for all mankind. Are you to be a hindrance?
Peter: I'm sorry, Master.
Jesus: Whenever you drink this "cup of redemption", do
so in memory of me. Up to now you have taken this cup to remind you of
God's redemption of your forefathers at that first Passover under Moses.
But from now on, this cup will remind you of my blood to be shed. (All
must drink from their cup).
Narrator: And so was instituted Holy Communion. Passover was a
festival of remembrance, a time to remember the physical salvation of
the Jews at the time of the Exodus. Jesus used this very festival to create
a new act of remembrance, the taking of bread and wine by Christians ever
since, to remember our spiritual salvation through the broken body and
the shed blood of Jesus Christ.
